1. Different Culture: Western culture is more agressive and outward. So XT summit is the competition when the Art of War meets the Art of the Deal.
2. Different Political System: We cannot imagine what will happen if Xi had been treated by the media the same way like Trump.
So both of the above-mentioned gave Trump an upperhand in the summit.

I agree it is an embarrassed summit and a hard talk, given the imbroglio of SCS,ECS, TW and Korea peninsula issues.
Xi and Trump cannot reach any tangible outcomes or even consensus at the meeting.
